Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) goals were outlined in the 32nd Annual General Meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in India (AMCHAM), which was held in New Delhi.
The meeting featured a panel discussion on ‘Meeting Net Zero Target – India Embarking on CCUS Mission,’ where Atanu Mukherjee, President and CEO of Dastur Energy, spoke on the role that CCUS technologies could play in India’s journey towards achieving its Net Zero emissions goal.
The panel brought together leading voices from industry and government, including Mukherjee; Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, Government of India; Anil Bhatia, CEO of Emerson India; and Ashish Modi, President of Honeywell India.
The discussion underlined the importance of collaboration between India and the US in advancing India’s energy transition and highlighted the potential of CCUS technologies.
“India’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2070 is a bold and ambitious goal that requires innovative solutions and international collaboration,” stated Mukherjee during the panel.
He added,”Dastur Energy is proud to be part of this crucial discussion and believes that CCUS technologies can be a game-changer in India’s journey towards a sustainable energy future.”
The panellists discussed the impact that CCUS could have in reducing CO2 emissions from India’s industrial and energy sectors.
According to the International Energy Agency, to meet the long-term Net Zero target, the total CO2 captured from various industrial sectors needs to surpass 5 gigatonnes per annum (gtpa) by 2050 and double to over 10 gtpa by 2070.
Dr. Saraswat of NITI Aayog highlighted the strategic importance of CCUS in India’s climate goals, stating, “CCUS technologies will play a critical role in helping India achieve its ambitious Net Zero emissions target by 2070.”
