Dastur Energy released a report titled “Role of CCUS in Decarbonization of the Indian Iron & Steel Sector”, jointly with @Climate Policy Initiative (CPI). The stage was the “Role of Transition Finance and Transitional Technologies in India’s Industrial Decarbonization” event hosted by CPI, which saw participation from different stakeholders from the Indian steel sector, including policymakers, public and private sector steel producers, as well as international financing institutions and academia. The event also saw the release of a report titled “Financing Transitional Activities in the Iron and Steel Sector” by CPI.
The technical session of the event was led by Dastur Energy’s Debarka Chakraborty, and focussed on the role of CCUS in decarbonizing India’s BF-BOF route based steel sector, and techno-economic insights on how appropriately designed single point carbon capture systems can be financially more viable vis-à-vis other decarbonization strategies such as natural gas, hydrogen and scrap based steel making, which are based on the abundant future availability of these feedstocks, and help steel plants meet the Government of India’s Green Steel ratings.

Debarka also moderated a panel discussion on “CCUS Technology Perspectives”, which saw participation of eminent speakers from JSW, SAIL, IIT Bombay and Climate Catalyst, and focused on the role of CCUS technology adoption, innovation & demonstration, transition finance and collaboration between industry and government for realizing commercial scale decarbonization of the Indian steel sector.
